The CCA supports the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change

The CCA supported the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change highlighting how going further and faster with Pharmacy First in England could free up 30m GP appointments annually – five times as many as current plans will free up.

The report released on 5 July, issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS calls for:

  • Pharmacies to be further harnessed to provide or facilitate the provision of healthcare through expansion of the number of services, “bringing services closer to patients and reducing demands on general practice”.
  • The expansion of the Pharmacy First scheme to allow pharmacists to prescribe medication for a wider range of conditions.
  • Making full use of the fact that all pharmacy registrants will quality as Independent Prescribers from 2026, to free up 30m GP appointments in England every year.
