The CCA has submitted its response to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pharmacy’s inquiry into medicine shortages which examines the impact of shortages, causes and possible solutions.
In the response, the CCA highlights the adverse impact that medicine shortages have had on community pharmacies on top of the continued underfunding of the sector. Additionally, shortages place significant pressure on already stretched pharmacy teams, prescribers and patients.
The CCA proposes action to:
- Enhance the attractiveness of the UK as a market for medicine manufacturers who operate globally.
- Review the size of retained margin which has remained static for a decade now, despite the value and volume of medicines prescribed increasing substantially.
- Review the supply chain to enhance resilience through the removal of legacy requirements and red tape.
