Increasing Access to Diabetes Screening and Prevention Through Community Pharmacy

A CCA report is urging the NHS to commission a community pharmacy diabetes screening service which would save the NHS £50m in recurring costs each year. A type 2 diabetes screening service would create a clear national patient pathway for diabetes detection and prevention. CCA modelling shows that this would deliver a multitude of benefits each year: screening 1.5m adults and identifying 180,000 prediabetics; identifying 45,000 undiagnosed diabetics and preventing them from developing serious complications that require specialised care, preventing almost 7,000 heart attacks and strokes and improve patients’ quality of life; preventing nearly 15,000 people developing severe-sight loss over the course of their lifetime.
